Wherever he goes, a tourist in Singapore will see a world of trees and an ocean of flowers. Here, a myriad of tall buildings shelter the streets from the sun, while lawnsand parks dot the city. Other than those paved by bricks andstones of various colours and shapes, the grounds of the city are all blanketed by grass. Even the banks of canals and rivers are covered in greenery. The roads in the city are all separated by trees, and the circular and triangular road dividers at traffic junctions are covered with flowers and plants. Flowers bloom on the rooftops of bus stops, and amazingly, even pedestrian bridges and lamp posts are swathed in vines and speckled with flowers. In order to study the reason for Singapore's beauty, I went through a lot of material in newspapers and other publications. My general conclusion is that the most important element lies with the government's heavy emphasis on greening. Way back in the early 1960s, the Singapore government had already proposed that the nation be transformed into a "garden city". To this end, it allocated large funds year after year for the greening of the city. After more than 30 years of tireless effort, the long-cherished wish of greening and beautifying the country has been fulfilled. The macro-controls and actual implementation of policiesby the government departments, as well as the detailed policies on environmental control and their implementation, are also important factors contributing to this achievement.I admire Singapore's all-encompassing greening policy. The covering up of soil and cement surfaces eliminated dust, thereby rendering the whole country spotless. I admire the comprehensiveness of Singapore's municipal facilities even more. In a densely-populated country with high temperatures all year round and heavy rainfall, it is indeed a miracle that the problem of mosquitoes and houseflies has been takencare of. The tidiness and beauty of Singapore are undoubtedly manifestations of its overall national strength, the qualityof its people and the graciousness of its society. Not only has the Singapore government created a beautiful living space for its citizens, tourists from all over the world arealso able to share in the warmth and joy. Seen in this light, the beauty of Singapore not only benefits Singaporeans, but it also contributes to the whole of humanity!
I am a journalist in China. Although I am retired now, Iam still employed by a newspaper. Not only has this trip to Singapore given me pleasant memories, it has also provided me with many leads for my stories. After I return to my country, I shall make use of my pen to bring the experience of China's good friend - Singapore - and the friendliness ofits citizens to the people of China. Translated by Wee Kek Koon
