残忍的血腥场面，既震惊我们的听觉，又震惊我们的心灵。人敢于做出事情，别人却不忍去听。同胞和教友所遭受的苦难，即使在密室中也无法讲述给我们，因为这会让我们的灵魂痛苦不堪！然而，呜呼，我的国家呀，这些事情却是在你法律的前庇下做出来的！哦，基督呀！你的教会目睹这些场面，却一言不发！ But, of old, there was One whose suffering changed an instrument of torture, degradation and shame, into a symbol of glory, honor, and immortal life; and, where His spirit is, neither degrading stripes, nor blood, nor insults, can make the Christian's last struggle less than glorious. 然而，古时候有一个人，他的苦难却把屈辱羞耻人的残酷刑具，变成了荣耀、盛誉和永恒生命的象征。凡在他的精神所在的地方，屈辱的鞭笞、流血和欺凌，都使基督徒最后的抗争，变得同样的荣耀。 Was he alone, that long night, whose brave, loving spirit was bearing up, in that old shed, against buffeting and brutal stripes? 漫漫长夜之中，怀着勇毅和仁爱精神，在破败小屋里忍受殴打和残暴皮鞭的那个黑人，难道孤立无援吗？ Nay! There stood by him ONE,--seen by him alone,--"like unto the Son of God." 不是的！他身边站着只有他自己才能瞥见的一个人，站着一个"仿佛上帝之子"的人。 The tempter stood by him, too,--blinded by furious, despotic will,--every moment pressing him to shun that agony by the betrayal of the innocent. But the brave, true heart was firm on the Eternal Rock. 于是，祈求得到了满足！ Two days after, a young man drove a light wagon up through the avenue of China trees, and, throwing the reins hastily on the horse's neck, sprang out and inquired for the owner of the place. 两天以后，一个青年人驾着一辆轻便四轮马车驶过那条两旁种着楝树的大道；他把缰绳匆匆向马的脖子上扔，跳下车来就询问要找种植园的主人。 It was George Shelby; and, to show how he came to be there, we must go back in our story. 这个青年人就是乔治·希尔比；为了说明他怎么会来到这里，我们必须回去追述一番。 The letter of Miss Ophelia to Mrs. Shelby had, by some unfortunate accident, been detained, for a month or two, at some remote post-office, before it reached its destination; and, of course, before it was received, Tom was already lost to view among the distant swamps of the Red river. 奥菲利亚小姐写给希尔比太太的那封信，不幸在某个偏僻的邮局耽误了一个月才到了希尔比太太手里；因此，很自然，她收到信以前，汤姆已经消失在遥远的红河上游的沼泽区里了。 Mrs. Shelby read the intelligence with the deepest concern; but any immediate action upon it was an impossibility. She was then in attendance on the sick-bed of her husband, who lay delirious in the crisis of a fever. Master George Shelby, who, in the interval, had changed from a boy to a tall young man, was her constant and faithful assistant, and her only reliance in superintending his father's affairs. Miss Ophelia had taken the precaution to send them the name of the lawyer who did business for the St. Clares; and the most that, in the emergency, could be done, was to address a letter of inquiry to him. 希尔比先生指定妻子为他全部资产的唯一遗嘱执行人，表示了他对妻子能力的信任；于是她手头立刻就有了一堆十分复杂的事务要处理。 Mrs. Shelby, with characteristic energy, applied herself to the work of straightening the entangled web of affairs; and she and George were for some time occupied with collecting and examining accounts, selling property and settling debts; for Mrs. Shelby was determined that everything should be brought into tangible and recognizable shape, let the consequences to her prove what they might. In the mean time, they received a letter from the lawyer to whom Miss Ophelia had referred them, saying that he knew nothing of the matter; that the man was sold at a public auction, and that, beyond receiving the money, he knew nothing of the affair. 希尔比太太以她特有的精力投入到清理这错综复杂的事务之中，她和乔治好一段时间都在忙着收账查账，出卖产业，清还债务；希尔比太太决心不论结果如何，一定要把家产清理得清清楚楚。在此期间他们收到了奥菲利亚小姐介绍的那位律师的回信，说他对汤姆的事一无所知，说他是在一场公开拍卖中被卖掉的，除了收到卖他而得的款子外，其它事全不清楚。 Neither George nor Mrs. Shelby could be easy at this result; and, accordingly, some six months after, the latter, having business for his mother, down the river, resolved to visit New Orleans, in person, and push his inquiries, in hopes of discovering Tom's whereabouts, and restoring him. 这使乔治和希尔比太太十分不安，因此大约六个月后，乔治正好要为母亲去南方办事，就决定亲自到新奥尔良去一趟，进一步打听一下消息，希望能发现汤姆的下落，把他赎回来。
