The American Medical Associations notedthat Vitamins can help keep people healthy whenused correctly. For example, children may need totake vitamins for a while; pregnant women andwomen breast-feeding[2] their children may needvitamins; people who do not eat meat or are eatingless food to lose weight[3] may need them. In general, other people do not. But they should try to eatmoderate amounts of all kinds of foods-fruits andvegetables, grains, milk products, and meat andfish.

About half of all Americans who take vitaminsuse small amounts just to increase their vitaminlevels a little. The health care groups say thesepeople probably are not harming themselves. Theother half uses large amounts in an effort too[4] prevent some things as cancer and heart disease.

AMA researcher Wayne Callaway says thatthere's no proof[5] that this works[6]. And hugeamounts of vitamins, he says, can be harmful. Forexample, too much vitamin A can damage the liverand bones; too much vitamin B can damage thenerves; too much vitamin C or vitamin D may produce kidney stones. Dr. Callaway notes that manypeople may not get all the vitamins health expertssay we need every day. But those daily levels, hesays, already are a little higher than we need forgood health.
