在云南省西双版纳傣族自治州,人们盛传着这样一个故事:一只猴子在协助捕获3个杀人犯的过程中发挥了关键性的作用。 On a June day, a PLA political instructor,identified as Zhang, and a soldier, identified asLiu, were driving through the mountains inXishuangbanna when a monkey jumped on to thehighway in front of their jeep and began to point tothe south, all the while tugging[3] at their arms.6 月的一天,一位姓王的解放军指导员和一位姓刘的战士驾车经过西双版纳山区,这时,一只猴子突然跳到公路上,挡在吉普车的前面。它一边指着朝南的方向,一边不停地扯着他们的臂膀。 The two men got out of the jeep and followedthe monkey to a pit, where it started to dig at theearth[4] so hard that its paws began to bleed. 于是,两人下了车,随猴子来到一土坑前。猴子拼命地挖土,甚至全然不顾指爪流血。张和刘感到奇怪,遂把猴子带到了当地的公安局。 Zhang and Liu were confused and took themonkey to the local Public Security Bureau[5]. 猴子又把警察带到了那个土坑前。 Two bodies were dug out of the pit afterpolicemen were led to it by the monkey. The monkey pointed to a nearby village when the policemen"asked" it who the murderers were. 警察在那儿挖出了两具尸体。当警察"问"猴子谁是凶手时,猴子指向附近的一个村子。 
当晚,村里召开大会。猴子一进会场就猛地扑向一个企图溜走的年轻人,另外两个人正想逃跑也被当场抓获。 The three men later confessed to[8] murderingthe monkey's owners-two travelling show peoplefrom inland. They had presented a show in thevillage. Then the three got them drunk, stabbedthem to death and took all their money. They triedto kill the monkey too, but it escaped. They said ithad been crying loudly as the murder occurred.3 人随后供认,是他们谋杀了猴子的主人--两个从内地来的流浪艺人。艺人们在村里表演了一场之后,3犯把他们灌醉后用刀杀死,并抢走了他们的钱。凶犯还试图杀死猴子,但它终于逃走了。他们交代,当他们作案时,这只猴子一个劲地大声尖叫。
