But the Kissingers were a Jewish family in aGermany that was on the brink of[3] Nazism. Heand his younger brother were often beaten by anti-Semitic[4] youngsters on their way to and from theirschool; finally they were expelled and forced toattend an all-Jewish institution[5]. Their father wasforced to resign his professorship. After years ofsocial torture, the family emigrated to the UnitedStates in 1938. In America, the Kissinger family lived in NewYork City, in a neighborhood of Upper Manhattanamong thousands of other German and Austrianrefugees. Henry Kissinger was never assimilatediby the culture and society that made up America;in taste and style, he would always be distinctlyEuropean. After four years in a New York City highschool, where he had shown special talent inmathematics, Kissinger began to study accountingat night sessions of the City University of NewYork, earning his tuition during the daytime. Butthen, in 1943, he was drafted[7] by the U. S.Army, an army which was at war with the AxisPowers[8]. After the war, his friend Kraemer got him ajob as an instructor in an Army training school thatpaid $ 10, 000 a year. "That was real purchasingpower in 1946, " Kraemer would remark later. ButKissinger was not interested in that materialistlure; he felt he wanted an education of his own.And so he won a New York State scholarship, gave up his well-paying job, and enrolled atHarvard in September 1946.
