奥菲利亚小姐完成了对其它地方的整顿后，就来到了厨房。黛娜已经打听到这个消息，准备坚持自己的方法和原则，对一切新措施不予理睬。当然，她不打算在表面上进行明目张胆的对抗。 The kitchen was a large brick-floored apartment, with a great old-fashioned fireplace stretching along one side of it,--an arrangement which St. Clare had vainly tried to persuade Dinah to exchange for the convenience of a modern cook-stove. Not she. No Puseyite,or conservative of any school, was ever more inflexibly attached to time-honored inconveniences than Dinah. 这间厨房很宽敞，地面是用砖块砌成的，房子的一边是一个旧式的大壁炉。为了方便，圣克莱尔早就劝黛娜换个新式壁炉，可她就是不听。黛娜对于旧式且不方便的东西的依恋之情比任何一个蒲西派或者其他派别的保守分子都要执着。 When St. Clare had first returned from the north, impressed with the system and order of his uncle's kitchen arrangements, he had largely provided his own with an array of cupboards, drawers, and various apparatus, to induce systematic regulation, under the sanguine illusion that it would be of any possible assistance to Dinah in her arrangements. He might as well have provided them for a squirrel or a magpie. The more drawers and closets there were, the more hiding-holes could Dinah make for the accommodation of old rags, hair-combs, old shoes, ribbons, cast-off artificial flowers, and other articles of _vertu_, wherein her soul delighted. 圣克莱尔第一次从北方回来后，由于对伯父家整洁有序的厨房印象颇为深刻，于是便给自家的厨房买来一批柜子、橱子和其他一些设施，希望能把厨房安排得有条理些。他原本以为这些会对黛娜有所帮助，可实际上，他倒不如把这些设施用来作松鼠窝或喜鹊窝。因为柜橱越多，黛娜就越是可以给她的破布、旧鞋、丝带、梳子、废纸花和其它她喜欢的小东西找到放置的地方。 When Miss Ophelia entered the kitchen Dinah did not rise, but smoked on in sublime tranquillity, regarding her movements obliquely out of the corner of her eye, but apparently intent only on the operations around her. 当奥菲利亚小姐走进厨房时，黛娜没有起身，仍在那儿吸着烟。表面上看她是在监视其他人干活，实际上她在用眼角暗自观察奥菲利亚小姐。 Miss Ophelia commenced opening a set of drawers."What is this drawer for, Dinah?" she said. 奥菲利亚小姐打开一只抽屉，问："这个是用来装什么的，黛娜？" 
随便放什么都很方便，小姐。"黛娜回答道。事实也的确如此。奥菲利亚小姐从那堆杂乱的东西中首先抽出一块原本很精美的绣花桌布，可现在却是血渍斑斑，显然是被用来包过肉的。 "What's this, Dinah? You don't wrap up meat in your mistress' best table-cloths?"" 黛娜，这是什么？你难道拿太太最好的桌布去包肉吗？" "O Lor, Missis, no; the towels was all a missin'--so I jest did it. I laid out to wash that a,--that's why I put it thar."" 小姐，不是这样的。我只是一时找不到手巾，就随手用它包了一下。我准备把它拿去洗干净的，所以就先把它放在那儿了。" "Shif'less!" said Miss Ophelia to herself, proceeding to tumble over the drawer, where she found a nutmeg-grater and two or three nutmegs, a Methodist hymn-book, a couple of soiled Madras handkerchiefs, some yarn and knitting-work, a paper of tobacco and a pipe, a few crackers, one or two gilded china-saucers with some pomade in them, one or two thin old shoes, a piece of flannel carefully pinned up enclosing some small white onions, several damask table-napkins, some coarse crash towels, some twine and darning-needles, and several broken papers, from which sundry sweet herbs were sifting into the drawer." 真是没有办法！"奥菲利亚小姐自言自语道，继续把抽屉里的东西全部倒了出来。里面的东西简直无所不有：一个豆莞磋子，两三个肉豆莞，一本卫理公会的赞美诗，两三块用脏的马德拉斯手绢，一些毛线，一包烟叶，一个烟袋，几个胡桃夹子，一两只旧薄底鞋，一两只装上润发油的金边瓷盘，几块绣花餐巾，一个用针别好的法兰绒小包（里面是几颗小的白洋葱头），几条粗麻布毛巾、一绺线，几枚缝衣针，另外还有几个破纸包，里面包的香料撒得满抽屉全是。 "Where do you keep your nutmegs, Dinah?" said Miss Ophelia, with the air of one who prayed for patience." 你一般将肉豆莞放在哪儿？"奥菲利亚小姐强忍住脾气问道。 
小姐，几乎到处都有。有些在那只破茶杯里，还有些在对面的那个橱子上。" "Here are some in the grater," said Miss Ophelia, holding them up." 还有一些在这儿的磋子里呢！"奥菲利亚小姐一边说着，一边将那些肉豆莞取了出来。 "Laws, yes, I put 'em there this morning,--I likes to keep my things handy," said Dinah. "You, Jake! what are you stopping for! You'll cotch it! Be still, thar!" she added, with a dive of her stick at the criminal." 没错，那是我今天早上放进去的。我喜欢把东西放在顺手能够到的地方。喂，杰克！你干嘛停下来了？难道你想挨打不成？不许闹了！"说完，黛娜拿起棍子朝杰克的头上打去。 "What's this?" said Miss Ophelia, holding up the saucer of pomade." 这是什么？"奥菲利亚小姐举起那只装着润发油的盘子问道。 "Laws, it's my har _grease_;--I put it thar to have it handy."" 哦，是我的头油，我随手放在那里的。"

When 'd Mas'r ever get his dinner, if I vas to spend all my time a washin' and a puttin' up dishes? 那好，你再来看看这些洋葱头。" "Laws, yes!" said Dinah; "thar _is_ whar I put 'em, now. I couldn't 'member. Them 's particular onions I was a savin' for dis yer very stew. I'd forgot they was in dat ar old flannel."" 原来在这儿呀，我都忘得一干二净了。那是我特意留着炖鸡用的，我都忘了自己把它们放在这块法兰绒里了。" Miss Ophelia lifted out the sifting papers of sweet herbs. 奥菲利亚小姐抖落出那些包香料的破布包。 "I wish Missis wouldn't touch dem ar. I likes to keep my things where I knows whar to go to 'em," said Dinah, rather decidedly." 我希望您不要再碰别的东西了。我喜欢把东西放在一个固定的地方，这样我找起来会方便得多。"黛娜口气硬硬地说。 "But you don't want these holes in the papers."" 可你总不希望这些纸破得都是洞吧。"

Missis has spilt lots dat ar way," said Dinah, coming uneasily to the drawers. "If Missis only will go up stars till my clarin' up time comes, I'll have everything right; but I can't do nothin' when ladies is round, a henderin'. You, Sam, don't you gib the baby dat ar sugar-bowl!
