Annie: i thought i'd look into those radio shows.

Becky: you'd probably have to go somewhere to really look into them.

   Annie: definitely.

(annie tells walter about her travel plans. Walt is very reluctant to face annie's long trip.)

Annie: not for the kind of piece i want to do. I won't be in chicago that long.

Walter: when you get back, i'll be gone.

Annie: and i'll see you in new york. (wants to get in a building.)

   Walter: ok. I'll get...

Captain: this is captain browning and we're at our cruising altitude of approximately 35000 feet. The weather looks clear to the west and we expect to arrive in seattle on schedule.

(annie eats nuts continuously to ease her tension and the discomfort caused by the atmospheric pressure.)

Woman passenger: don't you hate flying?

Annie: yes i do. I just told the most terrible one to the man i'm about to marry. Do you feel that any lie is a betrayal?

   Annie: oh oh.

(sam and jonah are at the ariport to see victorria off.)

Victoria: thanks for bringing me out here.

Sam: oh, he likes the planes.

Jonah: sure. I'd really like that. ^thank you so much.

   Sam: he's eight.

   Victoria: he's good at it.

Sam: i read an article about this. All children are ^hideous at the age of eight. It's quite normal.

Jonah: bye. (makes a face as victoria turns around.)

Sam: jonah, listen to me. You don't know victoria. I hardlyknow her myself. She is, in fact, a mystery to me. She tosses her hair a lot. Why does she do this? I have no idea. Is it a "twitch? Does she need a haircut? Should she use a ^barrette to keep her hair out other face? These are things i'm willing to get to the bottom of. And that is why i am dating her. That's all i'm doing. I'm not living with her. I'm not marrying her. Can you appreciate the difference? This is what single people do. They try other people on and see how they fit. But everybody's an adjustment. Nobody's perfect. There's no such thing as a perfect...

(just at this time, annie gets down off the plane and comes to the exit whose elegance immediately attracts sam firmly. Sam looks at annie without having a blink and he takes jonah's hand and hurried to follow her.)

   Sam: come on.

   Sam: who's annie?

Jonah: the one who wrote us. Jessica says you and annie never got together in that life, so your hearts are like "puzzles with missing pieces and when you get together, the puzzle's complete.

(annie disappears in the crowds. Sam is very disppointed about it.)

   Sam: damn it.

Sam: who told you this stuff?

   Jonah: jessica!

Sam: i sincerely hope you're not marrying jessica.

(annie finds sam and jonah's address with a map and drives out to their house. She watches as they get in a boat and drive to a beach where they play in the glow of sunset. She tries to stay hidden as she watches them, but she is obviously taken with the father and son who seem to love each other so much.)

I remember the days of just keeping time

Of "hanging around in sleepy towns forever.

   Backroads empty for miles

Well you can't have a dream and cut it to fit

  但当我看见你的时候我便知道;

We'd go together like a wink and a smile.

Leave your old ""jalopy by the railroad track

We'll get a hip, double dip, tip toppy, two seat pontiac.

So you can "'rev her up, don't go slow.

Let's go together with a wink and a smile.

Give me a wink and a smile.

We go together like a wink and a smile.

Now my heart hears music, such a simple song

   This is where i belong.

Just the sound of your voice, the light in you eyes,

We're so far away from yesterday

Together with a wink and a smile

(late that night, annie talks to becky on the phone in her hotel room.)

Annie: i watched him play with his son at the beach.

Becky: did you talk to him?

Annie: couldn't do it. How did i get here?

Annie: that's not what i mean. I'm going back over there tomorrow and talk to him. I am.

   Becky: ok, good. Goodbye.

   Annie: "'beck?

   Becky: what?

Becky: no. That's the "'weirdest part about it.

Annie: thank you. I love you.

   Becky: i love you too.

   Annie: goodnight.

(the next day, annie drives back to the baldwin house. She stops her car and sees through the window that father and son are pulling in, so she gets out comes up to them with great courage. Just as she gets to the middle of the street, a woman runs toward sam and jonah and hugs them. Everyone lauphs happily. From the back, she looks very like victoria in the photo the detective has sent to annie - the same figure, brown, curly hair. But in fact she is suzy, sam's sister from chicago.)

Sam (hugs suzy): nice to meet you. Where's greg?

(annie is stunned and stops in the middle of the road. A big truck is coming towards her and honks its horn. Sam hears this and walks towards annie to see what he can do. He recognizes her as the beautiful lady he saw at the airport.)

   Sam: hello.

(what could annie say at this time? Another car stops to avoid hitting annie and thus annie returns to baltimore. Becky meets her at the airport and takes her home.)

   Becky: so then what happened?

Annie: so then i left, obviously.

Becky: you were standing in the middle of the street?

   Becky: i love that dream.

Annie: that was nothing compared with this humiliation. Nothing!

Becky: but he saw you, right?

   Annie: he saw me.

   Annie: he said hello.

Becky: he said hello and what did you say?

Annie: all i could say was hello.

   Becky: oh my god!

Heroine: and all i could say was hello.

   Becky: it's a sign.

Annie: it's a sign that i have watched this movie too many times!

   Becky: oh annie.

Becky: you are not a, jerk-

   Annie: thank you. Idiot.

Becky: you don't know who she was, annie.

Annie: i saw her, i have a picture of her! I'll show you a picture other! That detective in seattle sent me a picture other! Here, see? That's exactly what she looks like.

Annie: well it's her and he was crazy about her. (picking up a letter) what's this? This is from seattle. Becky?!

Becky: so i mailed your letter.

Annie (reading): "dear annie, thanks for your letter. It was great. You sound neat. We're very excited about meeting you in new york on valentine's day and seeing if we are mfeo. See ya soon, sleepless in seattle."

   Becky: mfeo?

Becky: it's cute. It's like a little '-"clue.

   Annie (casts the letter): ahh!

Becky: so he can't write. "'big deal! "'verbal ability is a highly "'overrated thing in a guy and our "'pathetic need for it is what gets us into so much trouble.

Annie: i am going to run back to walter's arms, if he'll still have me.

Annie: it means nothing. It was written before i went out there, before the ho. The only thing is, she didn't look like a ho. She looked like somebody we would've been friends with. Ahh!

(seattle. Sam, suzy, her husband greg, and jonah are chatting after dinner.)

Suzy: you saw her in the airport and then here?

Sam: i tried to talk to her. It was like i knew her or something. It was weird.

Sam: it was a very french deja vu-ish kind of thing. Oui-oui.

Greg; at least you're out there seeing people again. That's terrific.

Sam: well there's really just the one.

   Jonah: victoria.

Jonah: she laughs like a hyena.

   Suzy: is this true?

Sam: no... Sort of, a little bit. (to jonah) hey, tell them what you did.

   Jonah: dad...

   Jonah: dad...

Sam: they want to hear it. Go ahead. Tell them, tell them. Christmas eve, he phones in one of those radio call-in shows and tells them i need a new wife.

Suzy: oh you're kidding. That's so sweet.

Sam: now, he's obsessed with this one woman who wrote me.

Sam: yeah. She wants to meet me at the top of the empire state building.

   Jonah: on valentine's day.

Suzy: oh, it's like that movie.

   Jonah: what movie?

   Sam: carr.

   Greg: ken-.

Suzy: ok. She's going to meet him at the top of the empire state building only she got hit by a taxi. (jonah comes up and listen attentively.) And he waited and waited. And it was raining, i think. And then, she's too proud to tell him that she's... Crippled. (starts to cry.) And he's too proud to find out why she doesn't come, but he comes to see her anyway. I forget why. But, oh, it's so amazing when he comes to see her. (crying more) because he doesn't even notice that she doesn't get up to say hello. And he's very bitter and you think that he's just gonna walk out the door and never know why she's just lying there, you know, like on the couch with this blanket over her ^'shriveled little legs.

   Jonah: are you all right?

Suzy: and then suddenly, he goes "i saw the painting," and he like, goes to the bedroom and he looks at it and he comes out and he looks at her and he kinda just - they know. And they hug. And it's...oh god. (crying)

   Sam: that's a chick's movie.

Greg: i would say so. What kind of person would write to someone they heard on the radio?

Sam: oh i got hundreds of letters from women all over the country.

Suzy: just because someone is looking for a nice guy it doesn't make them desperate.

Greg: how about ^'rapacious and love-starved?

   Suzy: no.

Greg: it is easier to be killed by a terrorist than to find a husband after the age of...

   Greg: right, honey. Right.

Sam: well i'm not looking for a mail-order bride! I just want somebody i can have a ^'decent conversation with over dinner. Without it falling down into weepy tears over some movie!

Greg: she's, as you just saw, very emotional.

Sam: although i cried at the end of "the dirty dozen."

Sam: jim brown was throwing these hand grenades down these ^'airshafts. And richard jakel and lee marvin (begins to cry.) Were sitting on top of this ^armored personnel ^carrier, dressed up like nazis...

   Greg (crying too): stop, stop!

   Sam: and trudy lopez -

   Greg: yes, trudy lopez!

   Greg: stop.

Sam: and richard jakel - at the beginning he had on this shiny ^'helmet...

Greg (crying harder): please no more. Oh god! I loved that movie.
